Piano Trio Class led by Emanuel Ax & Yo-Yo Ma
JULY 24 FRIDAY 10am—12:30pm
In 1960, violinist Isaac Stern formed a trio with pianist Eugene Istomin and cellist Leonard Rose. For more than two decades, the acclaimed ensemble toured extensively and recorded the complete trios of Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, and Johannes Brahms. This Piano Trio master class is offered in conjunction with Stern @100 Weekend, one of three TLI Immersion Weekends in summer 2020. TLI Stern @100 Weekend ticket packages include this class.
Born in modern day Lvov, Poland, pianist Emanuel Ax moved to Winnipeg, Canada, with his family when he was a young boy. His studies at The Juilliard School were sponsored by the Epstein Scholarship Program of the Boys Clubs of America, made his New York debut in the Young Concert Artists Series, and in 1976 he won the Young Concert Artists Award. Mr. Ax captured public attention in 1974 when he won the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv and again in 1979 when he won the coveted Avery Fisher Prize.
Yo-Yo Ma’s multifaceted career is a testament to his enduring believe in culture’s power to generate trust and understanding. Whether performing new or familiar works from the cello repertoire, collaborating with communities and institutions to explore culture’s role in society, or engaging with unexpected musical forms, Mr. Ma strives to foster connections that stimulate the imagination and reinforce our humanity.
